Epidemiological survey of rabies exposed persons in Yi County in 2023
Abstract
Rabies remains a serious zoonotic disease with nearly 100% fatality once symptoms appear. Timely post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is critical to prevent onset of disease in exposed individuals. This study aimed to assess the epidemiological characteristics of persons exposed to rabies in Yi County in 2023.
Methods:
A cross-sectional epidemiological survey was conducted among all reported rabies-exposed individuals in Yi County from January to December 2023. Data were collected from the county disease control and prevention center records and included demographic information, exposure category (WHO categories I–III), source of exposure (dog, cat, etc.), vaccination status, and compliance with PEP guidelines. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the findings.
Results:
A total of [XXX] rabies-exposed individuals were reported in 2023, with an incidence of [X.X] per 100,000 population. Among them, [X%] were male and [X%] were children under 15 years. The majority of exposures ([X%]) were due to dog bites, followed by cat scratches ([X%]). Category III exposures accounted for [X%] of cases. Although [X%] sought medical care within 24 hours, only [X%] completed the full PEP regimen as recommended.
Conclusion:
Rabies exposure remains a public health concern in Yi County, particularly among children and males. Although most exposed individuals seek care promptly, gaps in PEP adherence persist. Strengthening public awareness and ensuring access to vaccines and immunoglobulin are essential to reduce rabies risk.
