Abstract

Background:
Varicella (chickenpox) is a highly contagious infectious disease, commonly affecting children in schools and childcare settings. Understanding its epidemiological features is essential for effective prevention and control measures.
Objective:
To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of varicella outbreaks in schools and childcare institutions in Tongzhou District, Beijing City, from 2017 to 2022.
Methods:
Data on reported varicella cases from schools and childcare institutions were collected through local disease surveillance systems over the six-year period. Variables analyzed included incidence rates, age distribution, seasonal trends, outbreak frequency, and vaccination coverage. Statistical analysis was performed to identify patterns and risk factors.
Results:
A total of [XXX] varicella cases were reported in the study period, with the highest incidence among children aged [X–X] years. Seasonal peaks were observed in [months/seasons]. Outbreaks predominantly occurred in [specific months or seasons], with [X] outbreaks recorded. Vaccination coverage increased from [X%] in 2017 to [X%] in 2022, correlating with a decrease in outbreak size and frequency.
Conclusion:
Varicella remains a significant health concern in educational and childcare settings in Tongzhou District. Enhanced vaccination efforts and timely outbreak response are critical to reduce disease burden in these vulnerable populations.
