Toxicological studies on the safety of cistanche deserticola extract
Abstract
Objective:
To evaluate the safety and potential toxic effects of Cistanche deserticola extract through systematic toxicological studies, providing a scientific basis for its safe use in medicinal applications.
Methods:
Acute, subacute, and chronic toxicity tests were conducted on laboratory animals administered with varying doses of Cistanche deserticola extract. Observations included clinical signs, body weight changes, hematological and biochemical parameters, and histopathological examinations of major organs. The no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) was determined.
Results:
No significant toxic effects were observed in animals at therapeutic dose levels during the study periods. Some mild, transient changes in biochemical markers were noted at high doses but without corresponding pathological damage. Histopathological analysis showed no abnormalities related to extract administration. The extract demonstrated a wide safety margin.
Conclusion:
Cistanche deserticola extract is safe for use within the tested dose range, with no evident acute or chronic toxicity in animal models. These findings support its potential as a safe herbal medicine, though further studies on long-term effects and clinical safety are recommended.
